What is spleen??

What is spleen??

The spleen is also a blood reservoir. The spleen is also the location where white blood cells trap organisms. If the increase in size is significant, the spleen can rupture. If the spleen ruptures, immediate medical care is necessary. The spleen is located in the upper left corner of the abdomen.

The spleen has many functions:

  1. stores blood for the body and releases it when needed
  2. destroys bacteria
  3. destroys worn out and damaged red blood cells

An injured spleen causes hemorrhage (bleeding).

What will happen to my child if he/she has an injured spleen?

The Pediatric Surgery Team will be watching your child’s lab results carefully to determine if the spleen continues to bleed. If the spleen continues to bleed, surgery to repair or remove the spleen may be necessary. It contains white blood cells that fight germs. Certain diseases might cause your spleen to swell. If your spleen is too damaged, you might need surgery to remove it. You can live without a spleen.

All vertebrates have a spleen. The spleen is similar to a lymph node in shape and structure but is much larger. The spleen consists of two types of tissue called white pulp and red pulp. The white pulp is lymphatic tissue consisting mainly of lymphocytes around arteries.
